If A Parent Is On Disability, Can Their Teen Get A Job?

Filed in: Teen Advice by BakoBiscuit on 11-23-09

My mother says that the social security offices told her that my brother and I aren’t able to get jobs because she’s on social security. I’m not sure if she misunderstood or what (she’s slightly dense). Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about the subject.

In most countries, added income to the household does affect welfare payments, but as each country has different rules, you would need to ask at the local office what their policy is.
It would be unusual for the total welfare check to be cancelled, but if she was getting a child allowance and you were earning enough to live, that allowance should be withdrawn.
